What to do if you are in a traffic accident
So we can be prepared to assist you after an accident, our attorneys recommend that you do the following:
- Do not leave the scene. Whether you were hit or if you hit something or someone—another vehicle, private property, a person, an animal, etc.—stay where you are and do not leave the accident site. Not only do you risk problems with any potential accident settlements, but you also the risk being charged with a hit-and-run felony.
- Call for help. If there are injuries after a car accident, call 911. If no one was hurt in the collision, call the police at a non-emergency number (if possible) and file a report.
- Call your insurer. Be sure to file a car accident report with your auto insurance company.
- Do not sign anything! Other than the documents from the police, do not sign anything, including documents from insurance adjusters that might arrive on the scene.
- Gather information. Get names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of all accident participants and witnesses.
- See your doctor. Even if you feel fine after an accident, you may still have been injured. Let a medical professional examine you. Not only might it affect a possible accident settlement, but insurance companies often require it as well.
